A Midnight Sun Read online

Page 21

I wrote A Midnight Sun in the sweltering heat of my kitchen while waiting to be treated for an eye melanoma, hoping I had another light shining on me someday, fearing death and the idea I’d never see a stage or camera again, knowing somehow, I had to come to terms with death, exploring the pain and knowing my life could be sweep away from under my feet. It felt unfair to lose my life and suicide fleeted through my mind like the idea of an easier squeeze into the next life. I just couldn’t see myself battling in pain and not having anyone besides me to help me through.

These actors came to mind and I mind-mapped the idea as a novel, I believe, to understand their path and choices, and like Ernest Hemingway (1899 -1961), Sylvia Plath (1932-1963), Ted Hughes (1930-1998), or Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), the few who come to mind, I think my writing saved me, the voices of this actors shaped me, redefine what I wanted to say, and held me through.

A Midnight Sun is my debt of gratitude, an homage to those who with fortitude showed me the way, shining a different kind of light which served as a conduit for so much love, and so much faith.

I love you dear colleagues and may God grant us a fair passage into the next stage. Those lights, buddy, those are fair and square and filled with power.

Glad you made it this far and hope to hold you still, in my way, inspired by your light and sharing my own.

  With great love,

  Claire Hazel Basabe

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

My gratitude to the following people or sources which contributed to my novel in one way or another.

Kurt Russel and his family for shedding some light into my own, and every artist who has ever decided to open the door to their lives for us to see.

The historians and archivists who have kept the lives of those who died and bring us their love from the distant beyond.

My friend Adam, who gave me ideas and helped me realize I needed to do some digging. Research is good and winding, especially when it comes to specs and tactics. I am well versed in all things acting but very little in guns and rifles. He led me through it and asked me to question my reasonings. I know my novel will be better with his technical knowledge. Isamu knows best and he told me so.

The man and women of the armed forces who constantly fight the fight we do not see or hear about, struggling to make this world a better one without the suffering we go through, giving of their own lives to keep ours safer and less scary. I commend you to our loving creator to keep you safe in every dangerous moment.

My mother and father gave me the love I feel for these old Hollywood films. The weekends at home on our state-of-the-art film screen TV (for lack of a better term) are still vivid in my mind. Every time I play Meet Me in Saint Louis or Blue Hawaii, I get fresh tears in my eyes remembering those days of family comfort and a singing duo of awesome parents who played with me, taught me about baseball, sang (my blue jay and nightingale of course) and taught me the importance of surrounding yourself with family and friends despite difficulty and chaos. I love you papi and mami and wish till this day I had that big screen TV.

My children who still believe in me and have the patience to listen to me rant about my upcoming project or were the victims of my vocalizing for plays and helped me develop my stories further than I could ever know. You are my loving light, the way the creator says to me I am worth it. And of course, Zoe, and the many grandchildren to come. You are my renewed hope in life.

To everyone else who had a part in this book and especially my colleagues and friend in the industry, writers and actors alike, thank you for your inspiration and companionship.

But, oh boy Marilyn, you’re my .44 and then some. May God keep shining a light on you.

And to you, kind and knowledgeable reader, I am forever in your debt. Turn a light on and keep reading.

And, when the sun stops shining on us all, may these stories keep you safe and warm, especially at midnight.

  With love,

  Claire.
